AMARNA: Site of the ruins and tombs of the of Akhetaton ("Horizon of Aton") in upper Egypt. Erstwhile home of Akhenaton (Anenhotep IV) until his death. Akhenaton believed there was a single god, "Aton", and made the official state religion thus. Amarna was built to honor Aton, not all those other gods. Akhenaton died rather young, and was succeeded by Smenkhkare, who was succeeded almost immediately by Tutankhaten, so quickly in fact that until just recently, we didn't know about him. Or Her. Some experts think Smenkhkare might have been Nefertiti dressing as a male pharaoh, but others think he was another son of Akhenaton. It's a mystery just now. When Tutankhaten succeeded his father, he promptly changed his name back to the more traditional Tutankhamun, reestablished the old gods, and moved the court back to Thebes. Thus, the city became largely a ghost town within 100 years.

Welcome to my humble site (and humble is the operative word here). Please make yourselves comfortable. Don't mind the adders.

From the look of the site (currently, at least) you may conclude I don't have an ounce of artistic sensibility. You'd be mostly correct. I am an engineer, after all. But, that said, I am working on making this a more plesant place to visit, with more interesting things to look at. Please check back occasionally, it'll get better, I promise. But first, I've got to find a good source for ancient Egyptian clipart...
